FAQ

What is Source 44?

Source 44 is a sustainability data management company. We help our clients meet increasing consumer and legislative pressure to create sustainable products without sacrificing quality, price or innovation. We manage the largest library of raw material and product sustainability data profiles via a unique platform, developed specifically by Source 44, and packaged as Material Footprint Data Sheets™ (MFDS), which we deliver to our clients for easy and instant access.

Are you consultants?

No, we collect, manage and supply sustainability data. We provide subscriptions to allow access to that data; however, we do not tell you what to do with the information and we do not judge. We also do not have any kind of rating or index system.

Who are your customers?

Our customers are anyone who manufactures a product.

What is an MFDS?

A Material Footprint Data Sheet™ is a form containing data regarding the environmental effect of a particular substance. Provided only by Source 44.  For more see MFDS

Where does your name come from?

When we explore the life cycle of your product we look at the whole picture. We want to know everything about the source of your product and its sustainability information. And “44” is simply the molecular weight of Carbon Dioxide (44.01 to be precise)!  For more see What's in a Name

How do I know my money for carbon offsets will actually go towards funding valid projects?

Standards have been established in order to allay concerns in the industry over fradulent offsets. Carbon offset subscribe to these standards, which provide specifications concerning issues such as additionality and validity. Auditors are then sent to verify that these companies are adhering to these standards. A few of the more popular standards are the Gold Standard, Voluntary Carbon Standard, and the Clean Development Mechanism.

What is the additionality principle (in relation to carbon offsets)?

The additionality principle provides assurance that the project would not have happened without funds from carbon offsets. This is important to establish, otherwise carbon offset money would simply be used to subsidize their day-to-day operations. A majority of standards require projects to provide proof of additionality in order to be verified.
